Beavers Computing introduces computer science to students. It is designed to excite students with little or no prior experience in computing. It is a problem-solving contest with a focus on computational and logical thinking. Topics inspire questions in computer science but only require comfort with concepts found in mathematics curriculum common to all provinces.
Several organizations across the globe conduct the same contest. Because of a few fundamental issues in how CEMC and Waterloo University conduct this contest, we decided to participate with Bebras USA. This gave us more flexibility to run the contest and allowed more students to win. However, CEMC's approach of providing awards to just 25% of the students in a school would need to be reconsidered for organizations like ours with extraordinary talent. As a result of fair assessment across all participants, 64% of our students won awards, and many more scored above the 50 percentile.
