Strategy Duels
Chomp Arena
A chocolate bar where the bottom-left square is POISON ๐. Every bite takes a square and everything above-and-right of it โ and whoever eats the poison loses. Mathematicians PROVED the first player can always win, yet nobody on Earth knows the general strategy. Your class can crack the strip and the square completelyโฆ then meet the edge of human knowledge. Solo bot ladder + live class arena.
For Educators
Built for the classroom
Combinatorial game theory at its friendliest: shape thinking (every position is a staircase), endgame counting, and two fully-discoverable winning strategies โ the 2-row rule (keep the bottom row exactly one longer) and the square's copycat bite (take the (1,1) square, then mirror every move). Above it all sits a famous non-constructive proof: strategy stealing shows player one can ALWAYS win without revealing how โ students experience a true statement that names no move, then learn the general winning rule is still unknown to mathematics. The Dojo's labs let them rediscover both known strategies against a perfect bot.
Grades 3+ ยท five bars in size order: Snack 4ร3 (fast starter), Strip 8ร2 (fully crackable), Slab 7ร4 (no human rule exists), Square 6ร6 (the classic with the famous taming bite), Giant 8ร8 (the mirror at scale).
Three ways to play
-
Learn solo first
Four bots, all open from the start: Crumb, Nibbles, Chewy, Megabite. Megabite plays perfectly and has NEVER lost when she bites first โ discovering why is the theorem. (Sim players will feel a familiar chill, from the opposite seat.)
-
Host an Arena
Open a room on the projector; a 4-letter code + QR + join link appear. Pick the bar, then watch live mini-bars shrink while the ladder climbs.
-
Join on any device
Students enter the code on a laptop, tablet, or phone and duel classmates. Matches rotate so everyone plays everyone โ no waiting, no elimination.
Run a live class in 5 steps
- Open the Arena โ pick the bar (Strip / Slab / Square), session length, and move timer.
- Share the 4-letter code / QR / link; students join on any device.
- Hit โOpen the Arenaโ: best-of-2 duels with the first bite swapped โ in Chomp, going first matters more than students suspect.
- Tap once to PREVIEW exactly what a bite takes (the up-and-right rule teaches itself), tap again to chomp.
- The poison-eaten square flashes in the loser's own color โ the whole class sees who got cornered. Podium crowns the ladder at time.
Tip: host on a laptop or projector (the big screen shows the code, QR and leaderboard); students join on their phones or laptops.
